The tensile behaviour of knitted carbon-fibre-fabric/epoxy laminates was studied by the use of acoustic emission, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Various failure mechanisms such as resin matrix cracking, fibre bundle debonding and tensile fracture of fibre bundles were observed. The sequence of events leading to the final fracture of the laminates has been identified. The effect of fibre architecture on the tensile properties and the tensile behaviour of the laminates is discussed.
