SURFACE-MORPHOLOGY AND THE RESPONSE OF THE THICKNESS-SHEAR MODE ACOUSTIC-WAVE SENSOR IN LIQUIDS

The surface morphologies of gold electrodes on unpolished and polished quartz crystals were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The effects of surface roughness on the response of the series resonant frequency of the thickness-shear mode (TSM) acoustic wave sensor under various liquid conditions are described. Individual components resulting from viscous damping, rigid mass entrapment, surface stress, and nonshear coupling interactions are distinguished through network analysis. The contributions of these components to the frequency changes are discussed.
