SOLAR ULTRAVIOLET-RADIATION AND TOTAL OZONE, AS DERIVED FROM SATELLITE AND GROUND-BASED INSTRUMENTATION

Daily broad-band measurements of solar ultraviolet radiation reaching the ground of Athens, Greece (38-degrees-N, 24-degrees-E) during 1989-1991 in conjunction with daily total ozone measurements deduced from satellite and ground-based instrumentation were used to investigate their association. Furthermore, employing a parametric model, the spectral and broad-band solar ultraviolet radiation for the period 1979-1991 were calculated considering the total ozone values, derived from the satellite Nimbus-7. Total ozone reductions of 2.5% during summertime and 7% during wintertime per decade, cause an increase in erythemally active UV-B irradiance of 5% and 14% respectively.
