CHARGE-TRANSFER TRANSITIONS IN YTTRIUM-IRON-GARNET

摘要
To study the magneto-optical properties in magnetic garnets, the electronic states of YIG are calculated using the unrestricted SCF-X-alpha-SW method based on the octahedral and tetrahedral iron-oxygen clusters. From the Slater transition state calculations, it is found that all the observed transitions are assigned to the charge transfer transitions from the oxygen to the iron. In addition, the transitions from oxygen 2p to iron 4s bands responsible for the photoconduction are found to appear at around 2.6 eV.
