The results of two surveys conducted prior to the 1984 and 1988 meetings of the Working Group on Mathematical Models of the International Geographical Union are presented. These surveys explored the promise of spatial statistics both in general and in terms of specific techniques and models. The most recent survey shows a consensus emerging on the greater promise of models over specific techniques and a concern over the role of geographical information systems. © 1990 by Association of American Geographers.
