EFFECT OF PUBERTY AND SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT ON DAILY SPERM PRODUCTION AND EPIDIDYMAL SPERM RESERVES OF PIAU BOARS

Daily sperm production and epididymal sperm reserves were estimated in Brazilian Piau boars, castrated from 1 day to 12 months of age. Elongated spermatids and/or spermatozoa were first detected in testes and epididymides at 4-5 months (puberty). Sperm reserves and daily sperm production increased progressively in the post-pubertal phase of sexual development (6-9 months), but from 10 months onwards the values became stable, thus indicating the achievement of adult levels of sperm production at this age. Sperm production rates and sperm storage capacity of Piau boars are limited by the small size of their reproductive organs, as compared to those of boars of improved breeds.
