2ND-ORDER AND 4TH-ORDER MAGNETIC SURFACE ANISOTROPY OF CO(0001)-BASED INTERFACES

Second- and fourth-order magnetic surface anisotropies (MSA) were determined for ultrathin Co layers on W(110), covered by Au. The films show perpendicular magnetization up to a Co thickness t(Co) = 12 Angstrom As a result of strong fourth-order MSA, the spin reorientation transition is discontinuous, with energetic minima for both in-plane and perpendicular magnetization coexixting between 7 Angstrom and 17 Angstrom Co. The change of MSA was measured continuously during Au coverage. It turned out to depend non-monotonically on the Au thickness, t(Au), with a cusp-like extremum at t(Au) = 1.4 Angstrom.
