ROOM-TEMPERATURE SURFACE-DIFFUSION MECHANISMS OBSERVED BY SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY

Using in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy, we have discovered several processes that mediate room temperature annealing of the gold (111) surface. These process are shown to be governed by motion of step-edge adatoms and not terrace adatoms. This behavior emphasizes the importance of cooperative effects in low temperature crystal growth. A model of pit motion is proposed based on a random walk of step adatoms. This model predicts that the diffusivity is inversely proportional to the cube of the radius of a pit or island.
