Polarization studies were performed on several steels immersed in dilute H2SO4, to determine the effects of C-content and microstructure on electrochemical parameters. Tafel constants and exchange c.d. for the h.e.r. possess minimum values at intermediate C contents, and are markedly influenced by the surface accumulation of corrosion products. Also, both βc and io increase with average pearlite spacing; the highest values are observed for spheroidize-annealed structures. It is concluded that these effects are related to the total area of Fe carbide exposed at the metal electrolyte interface. © 1969 Pergamon Press.
