A patient with aggressive systemic mastocytosis was found to have a clonal T lymphocyte disorder using T cell receptor gene rearrangement studies. There was some response to intensive chemotherapy initially and later alpha interferon achieved partial disease control. This case suggests the possibility that a malignant T lymphoproliferative disorder producing mast cell growth factors is the underlying cause of some cases of systemic mastocytosis. © 1992 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
