Automated perimetry is quite feasible in normal subjects (3.6% failures), and is equally feasible in patients not over 60 yr old with visual field defects (0% failures). Automated examination ends in failure in 30% of the older patients. Automated perimetry may be particularly suitable for purposes of screening to distinguish between subjects with and without visual field defects. Automated perimetry also allow performance of an accurate assessment phase, but in 16% of the cases the examination must be performed by a perimetrist. Automation of perimetry may make examination of the visual field widely available.
