摘要
A spatial explanation is sought for the enigmatic [O m] line profile variations found at SAAO in 1983. Offset slit spectroscopy has been carried out at SAAO and the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope used in 1-arcsec seeing to obtain both a long-slit high-dispersion spectrum and direct (narrow-band) images. Striking spatial differences are revealed within an [O in] nucleus ^1.5 arcsec E-W and —0.8 arcsec N-S. The two peaks in the line profile show a spatial separation and each has its own associated broad component, so that two Seyfert 2 nuclei (separation ^600 pc) exist within a common host galaxy. The observations offer insight into Seyfert 2 structure and dynamics, but the 1983 variations remain an enigma - at times, only one of the nuclei is recorded, yet the close proximity of the other nucleus makes this impossible. © Royal Astronomical Society.
