PHOTOSTABILITY OF ACRYLIC MELAMINE ENAMELS - EFFECT OF POLYMER COMPOSITION AND POLYMERIZATION CONDITIONS ON PHOTO-INITIATION RATES

Relationships between coating photo-initiation rate for acrylic/melamine coatings and copolymer synthesis conditions have been investigated by nitroxide decay assay. In earlier work, photo-initiation rates determined by this technique were shown to be good predictors of rates of QUV gloss loss in a series of TiO//2 pigmented acrylic/melamine coatings. In the present work, photo-initiation rates are found to be a function of coating molecular mobility and of acrylic copolymer synthesis variables such as initiator level and type, and synthesis solvent. When other variables are held constant, the photo-initiation rate is found to be proportional to the amount of initiator used during copolymer synthesis. Possible mechanisms to account for the relationships observed between copolymer synthesis conditions and coating photo-initiation rate are suggested.
