THE RESPONSE OF A LIQUID XE IONIZATION-CHAMBER TO 5.3 MEV ALPHA-PARTICLES

摘要
The collected charge and the energy resolution have been measured for 5.3 MeV alpha-particles in a liquid Xe ionization chamber. The saturation curve in liquid Xe is less steep than in liquid Ar. The energy resolution in liquid Xe is much better than in liquid Ar. The best noise-subtracted energy resolution of 2.0% FWHM is obtained at an applied electric field of 7.1 kV/cm in liquid Xe, which is near the limit due to the statistical fluctuation of the number of recombination ion-electron pairs.
