MODEL-INDEPENDENT EXTRACTION OF VCB FROM SEMILEPTONIC DECAYS

The possibility of a model-independent extraction of \V(cb)\ from BBAR --> D(*)l-nu-lBAR decays is discussed. In the infinite quark mass limit, the decay rates at zero recoil are fixed by a normalization condition for the hadronic form factors, which, in general, is violated by 1/m(Q) corrections. In the case of BBAR --> D* transitions, however, these are found to vanish at the normalization point. Including the full order alpha-s renormalization of the decay rates, we obtain \V(cb)\ = 0.045 +/- 0.007, a value slightly more precise than the currently best one.
