ELECTROOPTIC TENSOR RATIO DETERMINATION OF SIDE-CHAIN COPOLYMERS WITH ELECTROOPTIC INTERFEROMETRY

Electro-optic interferometry is used to measure the ratio of the electro-optic coefficients r13 and r33 for N-methacryloxyethyl-N-methylaminonitrostilbene/methyl methacrylate (DANS/MMA) and dicyanovinyl-hexatriene/methyl methacrylate (DCVHT/MMA) side-chain copolymers. The electro-optic interferometer uses a reflection modified Mach-Zehnder configuration, and results are compared with those obtained by the phase modulated reflection technique [C. C. Teng and H. T. Man, Appl. Phys. Lett. 56, 1734 (1990)]. Tensor ratios r33/r13 of 3.34 and 5.92 were found for DANS/MMA and DCVHT/MMA, respectively, for poling fields of 100 V/mum. Disagreement between the two techniques may derive from a piezoelectric contribution to the measurements or from restricted motion of the chromophores during poling.
