NONLINEAR TE WAVES GUIDED BY GRADED-INDEX PLANAR WAVE-GUIDES

摘要
The dispersion relations for TE waves guided by general graded-index planar waveguides with a Kerr-like nonlinear cover have been solved numerically by using the staircase method. Numerical results for gaussian, exponential, and buried gaussian index profiles are presented and compared with those for the step index. It is shown that for maximum power flow, the peak power flow ratio, and the range of possible mode index can be controlled by changing the profile of refractive index. When the fundamental mode is employed, the exponential index profile is the most attractive of all profiles treated here from the viewpoint of low power operation. On the other hand, the buried waveguide is useful for the selective application of the TE//1 mode.
