INHOMOGENEITY-INDUCED ISOLA FORMATION IN THE CHLORITE IODIDE REACTION

The dynamics of nonlinear reactive flows may sensitively depend on the presence of inhomogeneities. In continuation of previous work on stirring effects in flow reactors, we report the inhomogeneity-induced transformation of the well-known bistability hysteresis in the chlorite/iodide reaction into an isola, through the destabilization of the high electrode potential (previously "thermodynamic") branch at low flow rates. A coupled-reactor model together with the kinetic mechanism of Citri and Epstein provides an adequate interpretation of this observation.
