VORTEX-LOOP FLUCTUATIONS AND VORTEX-LINE-LATTICE MELTING IN LAYERED SUPERCONDUCTORS

In layered superconductors with weak interlayer coupling between phase fluctuations, thermal excitation of vortex-loops parallel to the layers affects considerably the elastic properties of vortex-line-lattices perpendicular to the layers, as found in ref. [8]. The predicted Lindemman criterion melting curve is T(M)H = const. x exp{-aT}. A simple derivation of this result, based on London Theory, is given. Experimental results on BiSrCaCu oxides (BSCCO) are analyzed. Good agreement with this prediction is found with a approximately 15 for single crystals and a approximately 8 for c-axis oriented powders.
