OBSERVATION OF A NEW SUPERCONDUCTOR IN THE QUATERNARY SYSTEM BI/SR/CA/CU/O AND ITS SUPERCONDUCTING PROPERTIES - A MICROSTRUCTURAL PROBLEM

In the quaternary system Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O we examined the substitution of Sr by Ca in the "1-layer compound" Bi2Sr2CuO6. The samples were prepared by two different processes, via solid state reaction or via the melting route. In both cases the influence of oxygen partial pressure was also investigated. The structure and its formation was characterized by STEM-and XRD-analyses. The superconducting properties were investigated with a SQUID-magnetometer and resistive measurements. All experiments showed that a regular intergrowth of 1-layer and 2-layer compound perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis occurs and is responsible for a T(C) of 90 K, superconducting volume fractions up to 70% (shielding) and critical current densities of bulk material in the range of some 10(4) A/cm2 at 4.2 K/0 T. This material can be described as a new phase with a probable composition of Bi4Sr4CaCu3O14+z.
