OXYGEN EQUILIBRIUM OF CHICKEN HEMOGLOBIN IN PRESENCE OF ORGANIC-PHOSPHATES

The O2 affinity of both components of chicken Hb was investigated in the presence of myo-inositol 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 pentaphosphate [IP5]. The efficiency of this organic phosphate was compared to that of IP6 [myoinositol hexaphosphate] DPG [diphosphoglycerate] and ATP. The effectiveness of the different organic phosphates is, in decreasing order: IP6, IP5, ATP and DPG. Apparently, whatever organic phosphate is considered, the shift of O2 affinity is smaller for the minor than for the major component of chicken Hb. Not only the tertiary structure of the .beta. chains, but also, indirectly, that of the .alpha. chains is modified by the allosteric effectors.
