THEORY OF NONLINEAR SURFACE MAGNETOOPTICS FOR FERROMAGNETIC NICKEL

We extend previous work on the surface non-linear magneto-optical problem, using the second-order magneto-optical surface response function recently derived in an equation of motion formalism, and calculate non-linear Kerr spectra for the surface of ferromagnetic nickel. We find that the non-linear magneto-optical Kerr effect should be detectable in surface second harmonic generation experiments. The dependence of the spectra on detailed features of the bandstructure, especially of unoccupied states taken from calculations and inverse photoemission experiments, is discussed. We point out possible extensions of our theory. © 1990 Pergamon Press plc.
