摘要
The proof of the joking is not in the explaining. Those who do not understand a joke and have it explained to them do not find it funny. Humorists say what they want to and what they need to, secure in their knowledge of what is better left unsaid. The question then is, “What is to be left out?” There are three aspects through which the unsaid in humor must be studied: the speech act that is humor, the participants in the humorous event, and the rule-breaking character of humor. This paper will examine these different aspects of the unsaid, after which they will be considered in an analysis of various jokes and humorous situations. © 1992, Walter de Gruyter
