Also enantiomers of synthetic pollutants can be "recognized" in enzymatic degradation reactions. This is demonstrated by the enantioselective metabolization of technical alpha-HCH, a highly chlorinated, chiral hydrocarbon, in the liver of cider ducks. Extracts of this organism contain almost exclusively (+)-z-HCH, i.e. the (-)-isomer is degraded much more rapidly.
