ORIENTED GRAIN-GROWTH IN YBA2CU3O7-DELTA BY ALKALI-METALS (LI, NA AND K) SUBSTITUTION

Oriented grain growth and superconducting properties of Li, Na & K substituted YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) samples, processed at 915 +/- 5-degrees-C in air, have been studied by x-ray and SEM. Oriented grain growth is found to be maximum for Li-substitution followed by Na & K. Li-substitution severely affects T(c)(0) whereas the effect of Na & K are less pronounced. A possible mechanism for enhanced oriented grain growth is suggested, on the basis of oxygen vacancy creation, due to the substitution of cations, by monovalent alkali metals. The variations in T(c(0)) by the substitution is also well accounted by the mechanism suggested.
