SEED SURFACE GUMS CONTENT USING THE DUBOIS CARBOHYDRATE ANALYSIS

The Dubois total carbohydrate method was applied to quantitative analysis of seed surface gums removed from Lesguerella seed by ultrasound. Between 20 and 30 seed samples could be tested in triplicate in a normal 8-h day. The analyses were repeatable with a coefficient of variation of 4%. Germination rates of seeds were unaffected by the so nic treatment. Of 16 Lesquerella species tested, L. fendleri had the highest amount of high-molecular-weight gums. Seeds from various Lesquerella species had 4.5 to 17.3% seed surface gum content. Lesquerella fendleri seed presscake (27.8% gum), hexane-defatted meal (35.6% gum) and gums of other genera were also amenable to the test method.
