摘要
The chlorination of carbon cloth, both as-received and air-activated, at 400 degree C produces carbons exhibiting increased water adsorption. Chemisorbed chlorine (ca. 7% by weight) is formed at 400 degree C and is not removed by sweeping with argon at 400 degree C. In addition, strongly bound physisorbed chlorine (ca. 3% by weight) is present if the chlorinated sample is cooled from 400 degree C in chlorine gas. This physisorbed chlorine has a large influence on the interaction of the carbon with water. The chemisorbed chlorine shows only a small effect. The removal of the fixed chlorine, either thermally at 350 degree C for the physisorbed portion or reduction by hydrogen at 600 degree C for the chemisorbed species produces a more open pore structure.
