摘要
An experiment on the relationship between body size and duration of precopula mate guarding in Gammarus pulex is presented in an attempt to test the frequency-dependent model of Grafen & Ridley (J. theor. Biol., 1983, 102, 549-567). Body sizes of males and females were positively correlated with precopula duration. The costs and benefits of mate guarding are discussed in relation to male and female body size. The predictions of a graphical analysis are congruent with the data and with those of other experimental studies but disagree with the model of Grafen & Ridley (1983). Furthermore, a major prediction of the cost/benefit analysis is that differing precopula durations will result in positive size-assortative mating. The analysis thus provides a comprehensive, explanation of mate guarding in this species. © 1990 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.
