The specific effectiveness of added ions to induce shape transitions in the micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been reinvestigated by means of the graphical method described in Ref. [10]. The sequence of effectiveness for counterions parallels the sequence of the corresponding c.m.c. values, known from the literature [Na+ < NH4+ < (CH3)4N+ < (C2H5)4N+] and thus not that of the ion's hydrated size. The ease of transition is found to be independent of the co-ion species, at least for Cl-, Br-, I- and BrO3-, but not for CH3COO- where it is favoured. Other than only electrostatic interactions - particularly hydrophobic ones - must be considered to interpret these experimental results.
