摘要
Present paper suggests a catastrophe theory model for structural phase transitions occurring in systems of interacting confined charged particles. Our consideration aims at ordering and crystallization effects and order-chaos transitions for ions in traps and laser cooled beams. We introduce a sudden symmetry change as a cusp catastrophe and relate the observed hysteresis effects with some plausible dissipation mechanisms.
