THE EXPOSURE OF PLASTIC FILMS AND THEIR RESPONSE TO 1.3-5.5 MEV HELIUM-IONS

The primary beam of helium ions, obtained from the 3UDH Pelletron tandem accelerator in Lund, was backscattered off a thin gold foil onto plastic films. Ions of seven different energies between 1.3 and 5.5 MeV were used. The angle of incidence of the ions at the films was between 18-degrees and 85-degrees. Two types of films were exposed to the helium ions, Pershore CR39 and Kodak LR115-II. Data about the equipment to produce helium ions are given and the experimental setup is described. The results of the angular and energy responses of the films are presented and the consequences for radon detection are discussed.
