The underlying theoretical aspects for the application of pulsed-field gradients to heteronuclear NMR experiments are developed within the density matrix and product operator formalisms. Specific rules allow the straightforward product operator analysis of many pulsed-field-gradient NMR experiments. Using these rules, experiments for coherence selection in two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy are discussed and compared with experiments that use coherence selection by phase cycling. Methods for obtaining pure-phase lineshapes are discussed in detail. Finally, pulsed-field-gradient experiments that achieve resolution and sensitivity comparable to their corresponding phase-cycled versions are reviewed. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
