摘要
Observations and reports in the literature led to the hypothesis that the ant, Formica fusca, was acting as a mutualist of the aphid Aphthargelia symphoricarpi at a site on Mount St. Helens, Washington. This paper reports the results of a controlled field manipulation designed to test that hypothesis. Rather than a mutualistic interaction, the ants were preying on the aphids. Predation by ants reduced growth rates of aphid populations on single host plants by 27% and reduced aphid densities by 64% during the experiment.
