DISCHARGE AND CHARGE CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYANILINE PREPARED BY ELECTROPOLYMERIZATION OF ANILINE IN NONAQUEOUS SOLVENT

Electroactive polyaniline can be prepared in nonaqueous solutions (such as propylene carbonate (PC), acetonitrile (MeCN)) containing 1.0 mol dm-3 aniline tetrafluoroborate (ATFB). The polyaniline prepared in PC containing 1.0 mol dm-3 ATFB showed a high discharge capacity compared with that prepared in 2.0 mol dm-3 HBF4 aqueous solution containing 1.0 mol dm-3 aniline (pH 1) because oxidative degradation during the electropolymerization did not occur in PC containing 1.0 mol dm-3 ATFB. However, the decrease in the discharge capacity of polyaniline prepared in PC containing 1.0 mol dm-3 ATFB with increasing discharge current was larger than that prepared in 2.0 mol dm-3 HBF, aqueous solution containing 1.0 mol dm-3 aniline (pH 1). From scanning electron microscopic observations, it can be seen that these polyanilines have different morphologies.
