THE INTERACTION OF ACETONITRILE WITH PT(111) AT 95 K - A NEXAFS STUDY

NEXAFS has been applied to acetonitrile multilayer condensation and monolayer adsorption on Pt(111). The multilayer is partly oriented and characterized by a single pi(CN)* resonance. NEXAFS confirms that acetonitrile adsorption on Pt(111) is strong. Particularly, the degeneracy of the pi(CN)* resonances is lifted. The polarization dependence of the various resonances indicates that the CN axis is parallel to the surface. The CN bond distance does not change upon adsorption. We suggest that acetonitrile interacts with Pt(111) through both the pi(z) orbital and the N lone pair.
