Ionic impedance factors were determined in large cores of undisturbed soil by measuring the diffusion of bromide ions through the soil to an ion-exchange membrane sink. Neither the method of conditioning the cores prior to the diffusion run nor sieving the soil and repacking it had a great effect on the impedance factor. The greatest difference in the impedance factor brought about by sieving was a 21% increase for a silty loam and a 15% decrease for a clay soil. For all but the most exacting work, ionic impedance factors obtained with sieved soil will be valid for soils in their natural state.
