Heteronuclear copper(II)-gadolinium(III) complexes of H(4)dhbaen and H(4)dhbatn, CuGd(dhbaen)(NO3)(H2O)(3) (1) and CuGd(dhbatn)(NO3)(H2O)(3) (2), were synthesized and characterized, and their magnetic properties were investigated, where H dhbaen and H dhbatn stand for N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)ethylenediamine and N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine, respectively. The Cu(II) and Gd(III) are located at the endogenous N2O2- exogenous O-4-dination sites of ligands, respectively. Cryomagnetic measurements from 4.2 to 300K revealed that the spin coupling between Cu(II) and Gd(III) ions is ferromagnetic with coupling consants J=+6.8 cm(-1) and +5.8 cm(-1) for (2), on the basis of the spin-Hamiltonian H=2JS(Cu). S-Gd.
