M13 BACTERIOPHAGE DNA AS A PROBE FOR DNA FINGERPRINTING IN GRAM-POSITIVE MICROORGANISMS

Hypervariable nucleotide sequences were found in the genomes of some Gram-positive microorganisms, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus stearothermophilus, Bacillus sphaericus, Lactobacillus helveticus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptomyces albogriseolus, and the Gram-negative Rhizobium meliloti after hybridization with 32P labeled M13 DNA. This is a further proof of the wide-spread distribution of these sequences. The DNA fingerprinting method allows differentiation between serotypes of the insectopathogenic bacteria studied. This approach may become an efficient tool in bacterial identification. © 1990, Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart · New York. All rights reserved.
