APPLICATIONS OF HIGHLY NONLINEAR CHALCOGENIDE GLASS-FIBERS IN ULTRAFAST ALL-OPTICAL SWITCHES

摘要
We report applications of chalcogenide glass fibers in ultrafast all-optical switches. The switching performance is studied with optical Kerr shutter experiments and through calculation analysis taking the effect of group velocity dispersion and two-photon absorption into account. The nonlinear refractive index of the AS2S3-based glass is estimated to be n2 = 4.0 X 10(-14) (cm2/W), which is higher by two orders of magnitude than silica glass fiber. We also discuss the capabilities of low power switching.
