PATTERNS OF OIL-SEDIMENT REJECTION IN CORALS

The patterns of oil-sediment rejection of 19 Caribbean hermatypic corals [Stephanocoenia michelinii, Madracis decactis, M. mirabilis, Acropora palmata, A. cervicornis, Agaricea agaricites, Siderastrea siderea, Porites astreoides, P. porites, Diploria strigosa, Manicina areolata, Colpophyllia natans, Montastrea annularis, M. cavernosa, Meandrina meandrites, Dichocoenia stokesii, Dendrogyra cylindricus, Mycetophyllia aliciae and Eusmilia fastigiata] were identical to their patterns of rejection of clean sediments. The rejection pattern was typical for coral species, and displayed maximum and minimum rates dependent on the size and density of the oil-sediment particles. The viscosity of the oil determined the size of the oil-sediment particles. A coral''s efficiency of sediment rejection depended on the size and amount of the sediment particles. Oil drops .gtoreq. 0.06 mm were removed by the coral''s tissues. Physical contact with oil-sediment particles appeared to be less harmful to corals than the toxic effects of oils.
