Laboratory studies are presented which show that the production rate of nitrous and nitric acids from the heterogeneous reaction of NO2 [2NO2+H2O-->HONO+HNO3] on materials having high surface roughness is significantly high, and that nitrous acid produced and adsorbed on the surface is released in the gas phase, the extent of release depending on the adsorptive properties of the surface and the thermodynamic conditions. Indoor environments, characterized by high surface to volume ratios and high surface areas available for reaction, constitute an ideal condition for the occurrence of high nitrous acid air concentration. Measurements of indoor nitrous acid and NO2 concentration and temporal behaviour provide observational evidence of this hypothesis and strongly support the proposed model.
