RESONANCE DECAYS AND ENTROPY BALANCE IN RELATIVISTIC NUCLEAR COLLISIONS

摘要
We show that for an estimate of the total entropy produced in heavy ion collisions it is important to take into account resonance decay contributions. The naive procedure, which starts from the measured total or (negative) charged multiplicity and assumes an ideal Bose gas of massless pions for the equation of state. underestimates the entropy by up to a factor 2 compared to more realistic models of the system at freeze-out. The main reasons for this are a higher entropy per particle in a realistic hadron resonance gas and large non-thermal contributions to the observed pion multiplicity from resonance decays.
