COOLING-INDUCED MELTING OF ION CRYSTALS IN A PAUL TRAP

摘要
Based on analytical calculations and numerical simulations it is shown that cooling can result in the melting of Coulomb crystals stored in a Paul trap. The effect is dynamical in origin and relies on the modification of the stability region of the Paul trap in the presence of damping. A diagnostic tool for beam crystallization in storage rings is suggested. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
