THE ADIABATIC TRANSPORT OF SUPERTHERMAL DISTRIBUTIONS MODELED BY KAPPA-FUNCTIONS

The Boltzmann entropy of a superthermal distribution modelled by a kappa function is calculated. It is shown that, for adiabatic transport, the quality (T-core(3/2)/n)xi(kappa) remains constant where T-core is the core Maxwellian temperature, n is the density, and xi(kappa) is a function of the high energy spectral index, kappa. For large values of kappa commonly found in space plasmas (kappa > 4), the quantity T-3/2/n where T = {kappa/(kappa - 3/2)} T-core is approximately constant for adiabatic transport.
