摘要
Patients who smoke cigarettes are believed to have a nonunion rale that is 3 to 4 times higher than that In nonsmokere undergoing spine fusion. Thi3 month hvo recognized experts discuss their respective opinions royjrdlny mandatory smoking cessation before spinal fusion—s controversial and unpopular requirement for their patients. Dr. Whitesides is emphatic that patients must take an active role In thslr care and be willing to stop smoking; Dr. Henley feels that this strong of a position Is not practical in many instances, and he offers a more tempered opinion. © 1994, J.B.
