摘要
The larval salivary glands of D. melanogaster, which are widely used for cytogenetic studies, are also useful for studying the regulation of specific protein synthesis during differentiation. These glands synthesize and secrete massive amounts of a glue which attaches the pupae to the substrate during metamorphosis. Six major proteins were found in this glue. They showed wide quantitative and qualitative variation among wild-type strains of D. melanogaster. Of the proteins 4 were glycosylated, and 1 of these was further modified so that its mobility on SDS [sodium dodecyl sulfate] polyacrylamide gels was greater than the mobility of its unmodified precursor. The glue proteins began to be made at .apprx. 106 h after egg deposition. The synthesis of 4 of the proteins begins coordinately, while 1 protein began to be made slightly earlier and 1 slightly later. The proteins were synthesized for .apprx. 14 h until puparium formation, when the glue was released from the salivary glands. Synthesis of 5 of the glue proteins stopped abruptly within a few minutes after the glue was released. The 6th protein continued to be synthesized for at least 30 min after glue release.
