PROTONATED ACETALDEHYDE CLUSTERS - STABILITY, STRUCTURE AND METASTABLE UNIMOLECULAR DECOMPOSITION

Neutral acetaldehyde clusters, prepared in a pulsed nozzle supersonic expansion, are ionized by using multiphoton ionization and investigated with a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry technique. The only observed cluster ions resulting from intracluster ion-molecule reactions following ionization are (CH3CHO)nH+, n=1-11. Among all observed protonated acetaldehyde clusters, (CH3CHO)2H+ and (CH3CHO)4H+ are found to be particularly stable. The experimental results give new insights into stable structures of hydrogen bonded acetaldehyde cluster ions. In a sampled time window of a few tens of microseconds, all protonated cluster ions with n=2-11, undergo metastable unimolecular decomposition, losing one acetaldehyde molecule. © 1990.
