The regeneration of hyaluronic acid in the vitreous of owl monkey (douroucoulis, Aotus trivirgatus) eyes was studied. Replacement of 1 ml of liquid vitreous by 0·15 n NaCl caused a very slight inflammatory reaction that disappeared during the first 10 postoperative days as observed by examination with the slit-lamp and ophthalmoscope. A net loss of hyaluronic acid took place during the 3 weeks following replacement. A net production of hyaluronic acid was observed in several animals after the 28th day. Intramuscularly administered 1-[14C]glucosamine was incorporated at a higher rate into the hyaluronic acid prepared from the replaced vitreous than that prepared from the vitreous of the control eye. © 1969 Academic Press Inc.
