Global texture is believed to evolve such that the comoving number density of textures unwinding in a conformal time interval deta scales with the horizon size, dn/deta = nueta-4. Predictions of the large-scale structure and microwave anisotropy generated by texture depend critically on the value of nu. It is suggested that previous analyses may have overestimated nu for various reasons, and the qualitative consequences of this are discussed. A preliminary reassessment suggests nu < 0.01 in a matter-dominated universe, and the conditions for a more accurate determination are detailed.
