THE SURFACE-BRIGHTNESS FLUCTUATION DISTANCE OF NGC5128

摘要
We present observations of the surface-brightness fluctuations and photometry of globular clusters in the interacting galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). We find that the fluctuation apparent magnitudes are m̄I = 26.08 and m̄V = 28.12; the I band magnitude implies that NGC 5128 is 3.1 ± 0.1 Mpc distant. This distance is in good agreement with those derived from the globular cluster luminosity function and supernovae, but is 20% smaller than that derived from the planetary nebula luminosity function.
